My approach to both dulcimer and guitar is traditional, meaning by ear with the minimum of reading tableture. To get you off the page and working from memory. I start with simple styles so you can develop a repertoire and enjoy making music. Then you can develop more sophisticated styles of playing and have your repertoire to enjoy playing as you learn new ways of playing. I take the music from our shared cultural heritage.

Music never came easy for me, that combined with being a different learner has informed my teaching. Music has always had a great meaning in my life. It has provided a way back to myself in times of stress and difficulties. To me the purpose of music is personal enjoyment and sharing it with family and friends. When we share our music from the heart our skill and virtuosity on our instrument is only of secondary importance. What we share is what is remembered.

American Folk Guitar

I teach American Folk Guitar with an emphasis on traditional songs and branching out from there.

Dulcimer lessons

I give dulcimer lessons in the traditional style, playing the melody on the string (or double strings) closest to you and using the other two strings as drone strings.

I teach lessons at my home in Central Vermont and Newton, MA. If you would like lessons please call me to schedule your lessons.
